Microsoft Office OneNote Team

The OneNote team is a very creative and pioneering marketing group, and came to us with many raw ideas. They had a good physical trial, but wanted to provide a free download of the application, capturing registrations that could deliver their product to consumers, measure product activations, and it needed to be run globally.

As with many long-term marketing programs that are venturing into new territory, this program evolved dramatically as early successes were realized and new ideas to refine the program came into play. Catalysis was already running the Office 2003 trial program (one of the world’s largest software trial programs) for all other Office products, but this was mainly for physical distribution.

We started a pilot project with a simple integration of the download experience into the existing consumer Office System trial program. This was immediately a hit with consumers, but the registration and checkout experience was a bit cumbersome, since it was really built for physical distribution needs. We conducted a series of meetings to better define the business requirements and developed a new system that addressed the client’s needs. This included a simpler order process for downloads versus physical items, localization in 23 languages, and the implementation of a follow-up survey designed to poll users on their evaluation of and eventual conversion to fully licensed products.
